The user is subsequently able to perform a selective query on
a specific area of the excavation and the option lists are automatically
updated on the basis of the values chosen.
Once the year and the topographical area have been selected, the
user can read the whole text or perform four specific types of
search: structure, layer, artefact, and inscription.
As it has
been developed the application also offers the possibility to
link to and be queried by the on-line GIS. For it is possible
to associate to the geographical data hyperlinks containing query
strings of parameters to pass to the ASP pages. This meets the
two main objectives of the project: to integrate textual data
with their geographical context, and to initiate a text-based
retrieval system for the Internet, after having set some data
access restrictions to guarantee the safety of the archaeological
site.
In order to meet these aims it was decided to implement an Internet
system using the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating system.
For the moment, the sample chosen on this web site to give proof
of the whole search engine concerns querying the documents referring
to the 1983 excavation season.
